Liberia Mining & Resources Sector Report: FY2024–2026
Liberia's mining sector experienced transformational growth, with iron ore production tripling from 5.2M MT (2024) to 14.9M MT (2025), driving the sector's GDP share from 25% to 28.5%. Gold output rose 44% YoY to 410,000 oz in 2025. Mining export earnings surged from USD 820M to USD 1.34B. The sector is the primary engine of Liberia's economic resurgence.
Mining & Resources Sector: FY2024–2026
Iron Ore — The Growth Engine
Iron ore production recorded a landmark tripling: from 5.2 million MT in 2024 to 14.9 million MT in 2025. February 2026 alone recorded 3 million MT — an all-time monthly record. This expansion, anchored by major concession operations, is the single most powerful driver of Liberia's GDP growth acceleration to 5.1% in 2025.
Gold Production
Gold output accelerated sharply, rising to approximately 410,000 oz in 2025, up from 285,000 oz in 2024 (+44%). A record monthly extraction of 59,000 oz was recorded in July 2025. Gold and iron ore together constitute the backbone of Liberia's extractive revenue, collectively generating over 70% of export earnings.
Diamonds
Diamond output grew moderately from 38,500 carats (2024) to 41,000 carats (2025), reflecting steady artisanal and small-scale mining activity under the Kimberley Process.
Sector Contribution & Investment
Mining's share of GDP rose from 25% (2024) to 28.5% (2025). Mining export earnings surged from USD 820M to USD 1.34B. FDI into the mining sector increased from USD 320M to USD 385M, reinforcing investor confidence driven by strong commodity prices and expanding concession capacity.
Outlook to 2026
Projected production of 18.5M MT of iron ore in 2026 positions Liberia among West Africa's fastest-growing mineral exporters. Gold production is expected to sustain its upward trend with continued concession expansions.
